Puffin 42 — A Contemporary Classic
This spring, the Puffin 42 was launched. This 42-footer is the smallest model in the Puffin range, alongside a 50- and 58-footer, all three designed by Olivier van Meer. The yachts are built by VMG Yachtbuilders in Enkhuizen.
The first Puffin saw the light of day in the early 1990s and immediately stood out for its contemporary design: a voluminous bow, elegantly tumblehome topsides and a distinctive heart-shaped stern.
These features are still present today, although the design has evolved over the years. The lines have become sleeker, the deck saloon has been lowered and the original steel construction has made way for aluminium. The hull of the new Puffin 42 has also been left unpainted for the first time. Despite its aluminium construction, this Puffin 42 is no lightweight, with a displacement of 16 tonnes. This is balanced by a generous sail area of 120 square metres. As with the earlier models, Van Meer opted for a cutter rig with a substantial bowsprit.
The rig, however, is distinctly more modern: both the jib and the staysail have a high aspect ratio, resulting in a powerful yet easily manageable sail plan. The yacht will benefit from this particularly on broad-reaching courses. The extra-long bowsprit also provides space for a Code 0.
The Puffin 42 is available with either a fixed keel or a centreboard configuration. The centreboard pivots out of a fixed keel with a draught of 1.27 metres. As is customary with Puffin, the yard builds each yacht entirely to order, allowing the owner to customise the interior layout according to their wishes.

Puffin 42 — Eigentijdse klassieker
Dit voorjaar ging de Puffin 42 te water. Deze 42-voeter is het kleinste model uit de Puffin-lijn, naast een 50- en 58-voeter, alle drie ontworpen door Olivier van Meer. VMG Yachtbuilders in Enkhuizen bouwt de schepen.
De eerste Puffin zag begin jaren 90 het levenslicht en onderscheidde zich direct door haar eigentijdse ontwerp: een volumineuze boeg, sierlijk invallende boorden en een karakteristiek, hartvormig achterschip.
Nog altijd zijn deze kenmerken aanwezig, al is het ontwerp in de loop der jaren met zijn tijd meegegaan. De lijnen zijn strakker geworden, de deksalon is lager uitgevoerd en de oorspronkelijke staalbouw heeft plaatsgemaakt voor aluminium. Bij de nieuwe Puffin 42 is de romp bovendien voor het eerst ongeschilderd gelaten. Ondanks de aluminium constructie is deze Puffin 42 met een waterverplaatsing van 16 ton geen lichtgewicht. Daar staat een royaal zeiloppervlak van 120 vierkante meter tegenover. Net als bij de eerdere modellen koos Van Meer voor een kottertuig met een zware boegspriet.
De uitvoering is wel duidelijk moderner: zowel de fok als de kluiver hebben een hoge aspectratio, wat een krachtig én goed hanteerbaar tuig oplevert. Vooral op ruime koersen zal de boot hiervan profiteren. De extra lange boegspriet biedt bovendien ruimte voor een code-0.
De Puffin 42 is in een vaste kiel- of midzwaardversie leverbaar. Het midzwaard scharniert uit een 1,27 meter diep stekende vaste kiel. Zoals gebruikelijk bij Puffin bouwt de werf de schepen volledig custom, waardoor de eigenaar de interieurindeling geheel naar wens kan samenstellen.
